[ how did u start working in music photography? ]
i started shooting musicians ~spring 2023 by reaching out to artists i liked and wanted to help, but also to build my portfolio with. for concerts, sometimes there’s certain shots i keep in mind but a lot of it is thinking on the fly c: sometimes venues don’t have photo pits, allow flash, or it’s one i’m not familiar with. with more planned creative work, it helps me to make shot lists, mood boards, storyboards/treatments. not only just for me, but for the artist and their team if needed. also i’m lowkey a control freak so it just gives me ease of mind 😍😍😍 i want to make more of an effort to learn more about the technicalities of the equipment i already own too :D
[ do u have any funny stories from shooting a show? ]
recently i was shooting content for opener + headliners back to back and it was fun and i got everything done but i was so locked in i felt crazy and my arms hurt from holding cameras all night .... #fulfillingthough
another one i can think of is some guy sneaking into the venue/green room.. we were all like ‘i thought that was your friend’ to each other only to realize no one knew him… he got kicked out and ranted on his story LOL
[ you make your own music as well, how’d that come about and what were ur inspirations that got u in the type of music u make? ]
i used to play piano, guitar, flute when i was younger and thought it would be cool to learn production/recording songs one day but i was honestly just so overwhelmed by the thought of starting bc of how preoccupied i was with school and photo
i think i started messing around in fl studio last spring-ish? but wasn’t consistently practicing or learning because i was so busy. i interned in chicago for the summer and ngl i was so sad 😭 i was so burnt out, not shooting stuff i liked/was proud of, had little personal space, stressed from life shit, u get the jist... but i still wanted to make something so i made short melodies to cope bc i could just pop in my headphones and use my laptop
^ im still practicing drums don’t shoot me.. it’s difficult for me…
the more i made stuff, the more i wanted to learn and when i came back to ga, a bunch of my music friends and i hungout in atlanta and i feel like just being around them helped me learn. ik this is bare minimum but i can ask them anything and they never make me feel lesser or stupid and they really helped me understand a lot of basics/efficient ways to execute ideas i have in my brain (qioh, venexxi, phoenix to name a few 🥲 thanks guys) we also ended up making what was technically my first song that trip
so far any of my music that’s out is prod other people and it’s a mix of me writing stuff in my notes + punching in, i’d love to release something self-prod one day
in terms of my sound, growing up listening to a lot of electronic and Disney 2000s/pop rock prob has an impact on the stuff i make now. the vine edit era songs are too good...
[ to sign off, any advice u would like to give to other creatives in music? ]
make real friends!!! trial and error is ok, that’s how u learn!!!! and don’t stop pushing!!!! it’s not a matter of if, but when!!!!
